Digital technology moves fast, and young people need to be mentally agile to keep up with employer demands.
St Patrick’s Technical College principal Danny Deptula says traditional industry is awakening to the value of trained employees with both tech and conventional skills and knowledge.
He says more employers are turning to vocational education to source technically trained workers.
“At St Patrick’s Technical College, we are providing industry with a pool of skilled and tech savvy candidates ready and eager to start their skilled career,” Deptula says.
The fast-moving nature of industry means it is exciting, always changing and providing young people with opportunities to work in industries moving into new areas including smart manufacturing, advanced automation and robots, sensor technology, and new forms of human-machine interaction.
St Patrick’s Technical College is SA’s only school to be included in the Australian Government’s $5.1 million P-TECH Australia program, with a focus on Defence industries. Students in the college’s Information Technology, Metals & Engineering and Electrotechnology programs take part in the program, with industry partners mentoring them and ensuring they are learning the work-ready and transferable skills required for employment.
Defence contractors Saab Australia, DXC Technology, Century Engineering and PMB Defence, with the support of TAFE SA and the Defence Teaming Centre, collaborate and work directly with students.
“These core skills they have been learning will translate into Industry 4.0, also known as the fourth industrial revolution, and really futureproofs the students’ career pathways,’’ Deptula says.
St Patrick’s Technical College offers eight programs including Construction, Plumbing, Food & Hospitality, Hair & Beauty, Automotive, Electrotechnology, Engineering, and Information Technology, where students build connections with industry and are exposed to the world of work and opportunities.
All training is delivered at certificate II and III industry-recommended qualification levels appropriate for school-based delivery in trades.
