Bunyip Gawler – October 31, 2018: Digital technology moves fast and young people need to be mentally agile to keep up with employer demands, according to one of Adelaide’s leading trade and technical colleges.
St Patrick’s Technical College Principal Danny Deptula said tech industry jobs now had multiple entry points for a huge range of skills, and eventually all industries would require technology specialists.
“The fast-moving nature of the industry means it is both exciting and always changing,” Mr Deptula said.
“We are now seeing industry turn to vocational education to source technically trained workers who employers can take on a career journey from traineeship to Master’s Degree.
“This is an exciting time and young people have some wonderful opportunities through StPatsTech to start their career in year 11 thanks to our strong industry connections.”
StPatsTech is South Australia’s only school to be included in the Australian Government’s $5.1 million P-TECH Australia pilot program with a focus on Defence industries.
Students in the college’s Information Technology, Engineering and Electrotechnology programs have taken part in the P-TECH Australia pilot, which saw Defence contractors Saab Australia, DXC Technology, Century Engineering and PMB Defence, with the support of TAFE SA and the Defence Teaming Centre, work directly with students.
“The programming, coding and computer language skills our Information Technology students are learning and the industry knowledge they are gaining from Saab Australia and DXC Technology will serve these young people extremely well,” Mr Deptula said.
“These core skills they have been learning will translate into Industry 4.0, also known as the fourth industrial revolution, and really future-proofs the students’ career pathways.”
Industry 4.0 refers to the development of advanced automation and robotics, machine-to-machine and humanto-machine communication, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and sensor technology and data analytics.
StPatsTech is taking year 11 and 12 enrolments for 2019 and 2020 in Information Technology, Engineering and Food and Hospitality.
