Citi New Recruits graduate, Adau Dut, has completed her WPC Group Business Traineeship – the first milestone on the journey to achieving her dream career.
Moving from Sudan to Australia in 2004, Adau Dut completed her schooling, but never quite managed to secure a job. In 2018, Adau gained a full-time job as a WPC Group Business Trainee at the Department of Health & Human Services.
“I never thought I would get a job straight away because I never had one growing up, but then I got a job, and it was amazing,” Adau says.
Adau’s stepping stone to employment was the Citi New Recruits Program. She says she learnt a lot throughout the program, from which she graduated in February 2018.
“I didn’t actually know much going into the program. I learnt a lot of new skills, and what’s even better is that I got to put those skills into action,” she says.
As part of the program, Adau did a week of work experience at group training organisation WPC Group. She made an impact and was offered to stay on at WPC as a Business Trainee. With this employment came the chance to gain new skills and knowledge and an income. Adau bought her mum a mobile phone with her first pay.
Over the next few months at WPC Group, Adau gained experience in a range of departments, from reception to admin to payroll.
“It was amazing because I learnt so many skills I never knew” Adau says, “I learnt how to use a computer in a different way – in a business way, and I will be able to further implement those computer skills in the future.”
After a few months at WPC Group, Adau was rotated to the Department of Health & Human Services for a chance to further upskill while continuing her Business Traineeship.
“Studying business is such a good opportunity because it’s so broad. This qualification has given me the administration and management skills that I’ll need to eventually open my own business.”
Now Adau has completed her Business Traineeship, she is commencing study in Fashion & Costume Design at university.
“I’m madly in love with the fashion industry”, Adau says, “so I’m hoping one day I can incorporate business and fashion together and create my own clothing line and open a fashion store.”
